Gosau Valley...

Gosau valley lies in the heart of the Austrian Alps' Salzkammergut region, surrounded by
beautiful mountains and lakes.    In winter it is the resort for the Dachstein West ski area

The road through Gosau valley ends abruptly at Gosausee at 937m. This lake is the crowning part of the valley and lies directly below the mighty walls and impressive heights of mount Dachstein, the highest mountain of the Salzkammergut region. Gosau is the region's most popular resort for skiing, walking and mountain biking.

From Gosausee, one of the three cable cars of the valley climbs up the mountain side to a viewpoint overlooking the lake and across to the glacier on the Dachstein. Near here the mountain restaurant with its sunny terrace is the place to soak up this wonderful view.

Inner Salzkammergut is a place to enjoy at leisure. No matter whether you would like to engage in something energetic, or would rather simply wish to unwind doing something relaxaing - you are sure to find what is right for you here.

Natural scenic beauty, friendly people, vibrant traditions, a rich cultural landscape and interesting sights are the ideal ingredients for the ultimate holiday experience.

During winter the valley is transformed into one of Austria’s best kept skiing secrets. The snow in the Dachstein-West region is plentiful all season, and is replenished regularly with fresh powder.

At the base of the Hornspitz Express chairlift you will find equipment hire, lift pass kiosks and nursery slopes of varying length and difficulty. This brand new two stage lift transports you to the top of the mountain, from where the whole Dachstein ski area is available to you, including runs back down to the valley bottom.

One lift pass will service the whole region, including the brand new gondola at Gosau Hinteral, at the top of the valley. From here you have access to 140 km of inter-connecting runs, and 45 lifts with which to explore the region. The descents offer beautiful, quiet, unspoilt skiing and snowboarding, with plentiful log cabins serving traditional food and drinks.

As well as skiing there are 40 kilometres of Langlau (cross-country tracks) throughout the valley floor. These tracks are carefully maintained by state of the art equipment.

Maps showing the routes are available and they are also on notice boards placed along the routes. Langlau skies and boots can be hired. There is a ski school there which offers group or private lessons for all types of skiing and snowboarding.

Wide walking tracks in the snow are maintained throughout the valley allowing wonderful walking through the magnificent scenery. And to the rear of the hotel there is a small nursery slope which is available to our guests at no extra charge.

The hotel offers ample storage for both skis and boots and a regular free bus service runs from the front door to the valley’s two ski lifts.

The local authorities keep the roads ploughed and gritted. There is ample free car parking space available within the grounds of the hotel.

Springtime becomes awash with colourful flowers and the freshness of the new greens on the pastures when the snow disappears and retreats back up the mountains. The melting snow releases water which cascade down magnificent waterfalls.

Any other time is ideal for walkers and cyclists. Mountain bikers can enjoy over 400 kms of excellent marked routes across valley pastures, beside numerous lakes, along forest trails, up into the mountains and beyond. Walkers will enjoy the many route options and stunning scenery!

In summertime, rafting, canyoning, tubing, kayaking, diving, jogging, paragliding, hot air ballooning, fishing,  and  boat trips are there to enjoy, too. Indeed, the possibilities for enjoying fresh air and crystal clear water (white water or still) are virtually endless in Inner Salzgammergut.

Autumn colours are wonderful as the countryside prepares itself for winter; the whole area becomes ablaze with reds, oranges and browns. The mellow warmth of this season makes it an ideal time for outside pursuits.

Local Amenities

Gosau has a wide range of services including a well-stocked supermarket, banks, petrol station, specialist shops, restaurants and bars, and a good tourist information centre.

There is also a large indoor swimming pool in the village. It is the policy of the authorities in the valley that no high rise buildings are permitted, therefore allowing it to retain its traditional character and splendid outlook.

The Best Local Walks

 Gosausee

A great and relatively easy walk is around the entire Gosausee. It takes 60-90 minutes, and the view of the Dachstein Glacier mirrored in the lake is magnificent. The water is green, and along the path are many seating areas giving wonderful views of the steep cliffs where rock climbers cling on.

A further walk deeper into the mountains leads to Hinterer Gosausee, a smaller but equally beautiful lake. In the summer, refreshments are available at a small wooden building. A climb from here over the lower mountains goes to Hallstattersee.

Zweiselalm

A very rewarding walk is coming down from Sonnenalm to the Gosausee after going up by cable car. It takes two hours or so to the bottom. Great views accompany you, when walking down opposite the Dachstein glacier, to the lake and surrounding mountains, and you will probably meet up with some friendly cows! Alternatively, the trail down via Zweiselalm and along the forest trail below Hornspitz to the Three Churches, close to our apartment, makes a wonderful day out!
